Annual River Basin Tour

Photograph by Michael LewisEach year, CFWE takes lawmakers, water managers, attorneys and engineers, and members of the public on a multi-day tour of a river basin in Colorado. These fun and informative tours are a much anticipated event, drawing attendees statewide. In addition to learning about the history, water management practices and challenges of the basin, participants can take part in extra-curricular activities such as rafting or fly-fishing, dine at exclusive area ranches or open-space parks and have time to increase their network of peers.

2016 Gunnison Basin Tour

100 0614webOn June 21-22 we took a wonderful and diverse group on CFWE's Gunnison River Basin Tour hosted in conjunction with the Colorado Water Workshop. 

The itinerary showcased

  • Gunnison Basin hydrology & historic water management
  • Colorado River Compact, water banking, and the System Conservation Pilot Program
  • Local agricultural production and alternative transfer method pilot projects
  • Irrigation upgrades for water efficiency and enhancing fish flows
  • Soil health improvements for water retention and crop productivity
  • Recreational uses and environmental protection issues
  • Remote monitoring techniques and retrofitting hydropower diversions

2015 Water Efficiency Tour

In June 2015, CFWE explored water efficiency along Colorado's Front Range with a diverse group of about 50 participants. We saw, first-hand, the extent of water conservation and reuse along the Front Range and exemplary projects that other communities can use to cut their water use in the future. Find the agenda here.

2013 Platte River Tour

We had a great time on our summer 2013 Platte River Tour when the CFWE bus crossed state lines for the first time. Participants learned about the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program and interstate water issues in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. 2014 Yampa Basin Tour

In June 2014, CFWE and Yampa Basin Tour participants gained first-hand experiences learning about river recreation, agriculture, ecological health, future water demands and more in Northwestern Colorado's Yampa Basin. We were joined by a diverse group of elected officials, decision makers, water professionals, interested citizens and many others and visited exclusive sites and expert speakers. 2013 Upper CO Basin Tour

On June 20-21, 2013, CFWE staff, legislators, local water managers, water professionals, public officials and educators went on a fast-paced journey of the Colorado River headwaters. We visited exclusive sites and heard from expert speakers while networking  with a fun and diverse group.

Tour participants gained a firsthand understanding of headwaters health for thriving communities and ecological sustainability plus the related impacts and benefits of transbasin diversions for statewide water supplies.
